Investing in brains
Some days ago an article in The Economist (click the image) has presented the case of funding cuts in higher education in Western countries. In UK, the goverment has announced spending cuts of similar size to those planned in Italy, even if they will be spread in a longer period (by 2013). But soon the goverment will change and more cuts are likely to be introduced by the end of this year. Consequently, some of us will find it difficult to get a new job, or maintain the one we have already. Fewer opportunities will be also available for young Italians coming in UK for fostering their career - even if they will come in larger numbers owing to the current situation of underfunding and decline in the Italian system. Meanwhile in US, after the big injection of funds by Obama last year, the funding situation is bleak - in some areas of NIH grants, the success rate has gone down to 8%! So, not many opportunies in USA either. It's worth discussing this issue among us!
